Ice Cube Color Mixing Experiment

Good Morning Preschool Families!

Our activity for today is all about Color Mixing! The color mixing project I want to highlight for today is the Ice Cube Color Mixing Experiment. I will summarize it for you below, however check out this link for more directions, and ideas about color mixing.

1. A few hours before you want to conduct your color mixing experiment, you will need to make colored ice cubes from food coloring in the three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow).

2. Before you begin the experiment, ask your child what they think will happen when you combine two different colors.

3. Once the ice cubes are frozen, practice mixing the ice cubes together to make secondary colors (purple, orange, and green.) Place 2 different colored ice cubes in a cup, and watch the colors change as the ice melts.

Try these color combinations:

Red + Blue = Purple

Red + Yellow = Orange

Yellow + Blue = Green

Discuss what your child observes, as the ice melts and the colors combine!  See what other color combinations you can make with your leftover ice cubes.

We hope you enjoy Color Mixing. Have a great rest of the day.
