Jefferson and Franklin

January 18, 2015

This week we will be talking about Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. In their day, both men were highly respected, but not without controversy. Jefferson was accused of being an atheist. The accusation almost derailed his run for president in 1800. He eventually overcame the odds. He became the third president, but by the slimmest margins in one of nation's most contested elections.

Franklin had the most unusual theology. He was raised a Puritan. He became a deist. He eventually joined a Presbyterian church in Philadelphia. He believed in God but not as a singular Creator. Just as our solar system has a sun, stars and planets, the celestial universe had a plethora of divine beings. There was God the Creator and lesser gods that orbited our lives.
